Shrike Food Storage
Northern and Loggerhead Shrikes are notorious for skewering their food
on a stick or thorn
for future use--kind of a bird "food storage plan".

I was telling my friend Ruth about the Loggerhead Shrike spiking its
food on cactus or other sticky desert
bushes. Not long after that we stopped in the desert near Lytle
Ranch to survey our surroundings
and I happened upon this morsel. It didn't taste as good as it
looks... © Carol Davis,

I saw this large beetle as I was driving down a dirt road in an area
that I know has Loggerhead Shrike nests on
Antelope Island. No doubt in my mind it was the work of a
shrike. © Carol Davis, 12-5-2008

I spotted this grasshopper as I was driving out from Lytle Ranch in
Southern Utah. These sharp yucca leaves are a
favorite of Shrikes for storing insects of all kinds. Sorry the
photo's out of focus--my camera only wanted to
focus on the leaves. © Carol Davis, 4-20-2005
