Chipping
Sparrow Fledgling (three
photos)
A few trees at our campground were alive with chipping sparrows and
their babies this warm summer day. There was constant
high-pitched chatter
and it seemed like the baby noise was everywhere. Upon
inspection, I found tiny fledglings begging for food on branches
close to the ground and
higher in the trees. It soon became apparent that one of the
noises was coming from the ground. When I stepped towards that
area, this little
guy went bumbling and stumbling his way through the clumps of grass to
the bushes at the base of a tree. Soon his head popped out and
he was scanning the sky for his food source (mom and dad) and peeping
when he thought it was safe. In the third photo I was lucky to
get
him eying a northern bluet damselfly as his next meal (if it would
just come a little closer!) He and the other babies were just
balls of
fluff with these little tiny wings that were just beginning to
work. Soooo cute!
