Velvet Ant -
Male
Genus Dasymutilla

Winged male Velvet Ants are very prevalent on Antelope Island,
especially in late summer and early fall. This one was
feeding on a cool day in October. Males are winged, females are
not and can sting. Larve feed off other insects.
As you can see by their shape and coloring, they are often mistaken for
wasps. © Carol Davis, 10-23-2009
