Striped
Alder Sawfly (four photos)
Hemichroa crocea
When I saw this in the Jordanelle dam wetlands in the Heber
Valley area my first thought was "small wasp".
I love this skinny neck shot.
The larvae of these sawflies feed on alder, willow, and
birch.
It was tough shooting these photos as the sawfly was trying
to get away without actually leaving the tree.
I got enough information for the experts at
Bugguide.net to identify it as as adult Striped Alder Sawfly.
You can see
pictures of the striped larvae on Bugguide.net.
