Square-headed
Wasp
Crabro latipes
When I took the picture of this male wasp at Brighton, Utah,
I did not know that he had these beautiful extensions on
his front legs. When I downloaded the photo from my camera, I was
astounded to see this weird little insect with
tiny wing-like extensions near his shoulders--wasp "epaulets".
According to the experts on Bugguide.net, these
flaps
filter light during
mating enabling the female to recognize she is connecting with a male
of her same species.
Is that
the coolest thing!? I'm still in awe. © Carol Davis,
