According to Bugguide.net, this is a male Prairie Yellowjacket. I don't know on what basis

This bright handsome wasp was seeking nectar at Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City.
Since yellowjackets scare the bejeebers out of me, I didn't stick around long to take
