Mining
Bee
Andrena transnigra
Male

This solitary bee nests in the ground and can
be found in the Rocky Mountain area. Is that a beautiful
insect, or what?! I thought it was a female since it was
wearing a boa*. © Carol Davis, 8-9-2011

The females provision their underground nests with a pollen
or nectar ball and when the young ones hatch, they
feed on that. I found this little
guy in Brighton, Utah, dining on nectar. He looks a little
intoxicated in this photo.
