Bee
Fly
Poecilanthrax californicus
Poecilanthrax californicus is
a
Western US species.
This little Bee Fly had a strange behavior, much like a Deer
Fly. It would fly by me and then it would land on
the sand or on a bush, then it would take off again for a short sput
and then do it again. I kept expecting
it to land on me and take a bite, like a deer fly would. Once I
realized it was a bee fly, I enjoyed taking a few
photos. I understand that the female lands on the sand and dips
to deposit eggs with her ovipositor.
When the larvae hatch they eat immature insects. ©
